The Grand Traverse County Jail in Michigan has a rich and complex history that dates back to the late 19th century. The first jail was built in 1885 and was located on Front Street in Traverse City. The jail was a small, two-story building with a capacity of only 12 inmates. As the population of Grand Traverse County grew, so did the need for a larger jail.
In 1926, a new jail was built on State Street in Traverse City. The new jail was a much larger facility, with a capacity of 100 inmates. The jail was constructed of red brick and had a distinctive castellated tower. The jail served the county for over 30 years, but by the 1960s, it was clear that a new jail was needed.
The New Jail (1962-Present)
In 1962, a new jail was built on Garfield Avenue in Traverse City. The new jail was a state-of-the-art facility, with a capacity of 300 inmates. The jail was designed to be secure and efficient and included a variety of features, such as a control room, a sally port, and a booking area.
The new jail served the county for over 50 years, but by the early 2000s, it was clear that a new jail was needed. The jail was outdated and did not meet the needs of the county.
The Current Jail (2012-Present)
In 2012, a new jail was built on M-37 in Traverse City. The new jail is a state-of-the-art facility, with a capacity of 400 inmates. The jail is designed to be secure and efficient and includes a variety of features, such as a control room, a sally port, and a booking area.
The new jail is a significant improvement over the previous jail. The jail is more secure, more efficient, and better able to meet the needs of the county. The jail is also located in a more convenient location, which makes it easier for visitors to access.
